ExU attended the Voices Conference of Journalism and Media Literacy on March 14-16. Voices provided a platform for discussions of the changing journalism landscape and allowed ExU to engage directly with relevant stake-holders.
User Requirements Survey
In addition to advertising the ExU project to fact-checkers and other potential stakeholders, we took the opportunity to conduct a survey of user-requirements for a fact-checking tool.
The survey showed that ExU's goal of multilingual stance detection and claim retrieval is a relevant one, with 97% of 29 survey respondents reporting that they often encounter multiple languages when performing fact-checking. A chart of the reported languages encountered is given below.
Additionally, participants agreed that an AI fact-checking tool ought to provide explainable predictions. This finding has motivated a focus on developing models that not only provide correct predictions, but are able to also explain why they made those predictions.
